Understanding Cravings
Cravings are intense desires to use substances, often triggered by internal or external factors.
• What Happens During a Craving?
• The brain’s reward system becomes activated, making the desire for substances feel urgent and overpowering.
• Cravings are temporary, typically lasting 15-30 minutes if not acted upon.
• Strategies to Manage Cravings:
1. Pause and Reflect: Acknowledge the craving without judgment.
2. Engage in a Healthy Distraction: Physical activity, calling a supportive friend, or doing a creative task.
3. Breathe Through It: Practice deep breathing or mindfulness to calm your nervous system.
4. Challenge the thought by reconnecting with your reasons for choosing recovery, visualizing positive outcomes, and practicing a healthy, intentional response—these are key to sustaining long-term recovery.
