 Recognizing Triggers and Cravings

Triggers are events, feelings, or situations that activate the urge to use substances. Recognizing these triggers is a critical step in self-awareness and relapse prevention.

Types of Triggers:

1. Internal Triggers: Emotional, mental, or physical states that arise within you.

• Examples: Stress, anxiety, loneliness, boredom, fatigue, self-doubt, or physical pain.

2. External Triggers: Situations, people, or environments that prompt cravings.

• Examples: Social events, certain places, conflicts, advertisements, or specific people.

Reflection Prompt:

• “What situations, people, or emotions have led me to use substances in the past?”
