Emotional Regulation Strategies
Emotional regulation involves understanding, accepting, and managing emotions effectively without resorting to substances.
• Three Key Steps:
1. Recognize: Pause and name the emotion.
• Example: “I feel angry because I wasn’t treated fairly.”
2. Accept: Allow yourself to experience the emotion without judgment.
• Practice self-compassion: “It’s okay to feel this way. Emotions are normal.”
3. Respond: Choose a healthy action instead of reacting impulsively.
• Example: Practice breathing, journal your feelings, or talk to someone supportive.
• Practical Tools:
1. Deep Breathing Exercise:
• Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds.
• Repeat for 5-10 minutes to reduce stress.
2. The “STOP” Technique:
• S: Stop what you’re doing.
• T: Take a deep breath.
• O: Observe what you’re feeling and thinking.
• P: Proceed mindfully with your next action.
Reflection Exercise
• Prompt:
• “What emotions have I been avoiding or suppressing? How might I approach them differently in recovery?”
• Journaling Exercise:
• Write about a recent situation where a strong emotion triggered cravings or difficult behaviors. Explore how you might apply emotional regulation strategies to a similar situation in the future.
