Three simple recipes, botanical goodness, and the beauty of living alcohol-free.
When I stopped drinking, I discovered something beautiful: I didn't have to give up the little things I loved. I simply needed to find new ways to enjoy them.
The beautiful glassware, fresh ingredients, moments of celebration, and the pleasure of making something special at the end of a long day—none of those things required alcohol.
In fact, creating an alcohol-free lifestyle opened the door to a whole new world of intentional living.
One of my favorite discoveries has been All The Bitter, a Chico, California-based company creating sophisticated, completely alcohol-free cocktail bitters.
What I love most is that these bitters aren't just about making delicious drinks. They bring together botanical ingredients, traditional flavors, and simple ways to make everyday beverages feel special.
Today, I'm sharing three ways to enjoy them: a refreshing signature mocktail, an easy everyday beverage, and a comforting after-dinner drink.
Why I Love All The Bitter
When I stopped drinking, I was encouraged to explore bitters as part of supporting digestive wellness.
I was intrigued by the idea that something traditionally associated with cocktails could also have a place in my new alcohol-free lifestyle.
That's part of what makes All The Bitter so special to me.
Traditional cocktail bitters typically contain alcohol, even though they're used in small amounts. All The Bitter creates a completely alcohol-free alternative using whole botanicals, allowing me to enjoy those sophisticated flavors while staying aligned with my commitment to sobriety.
And there's something else I love: All The Bitter is made right here in Chico, California!
Supporting a local business whose products reflect my values of mindful living, wellness, and intentional choices makes the experience even more meaningful.
For me, living alcohol-free isn't about deprivation. It's about discovering new ways to nourish myself, celebrate life, and find joy in the everyday moments.
1. My Signature Mocktail: The Prairie Citrus & Botanical Spritz
Bright, refreshing, botanical, and perfect for celebrating life's little moments.
This is the kind of drink I love serving when friends come over, enjoying on a sunny afternoon, or making when I want something a little more special than sparkling water.
Ingredients
3 oz sparkling water
2 oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1 oz fresh orange juice
½ oz fresh lime juice
2–3 dashes All The Bitter Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters
½ tsp honey or agave syrup (optional)
Ice
Fresh rosemary and grapefruit slice for garnish
Instructions
Fill a beautiful glass with ice.
Add the grapefruit, orange, and lime juices.
Stir in honey or agave if you prefer a little sweetness.
Add 2–3 dashes of All The Bitter Aromatic Bitters.
Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
Garnish with fresh rosemary and a grapefruit slice.
Why I love it: The citrus is bright and refreshing, while the bitters add botanical complexity that makes this feel like a thoughtfully crafted cocktail—without the alcohol.
Prairie's Tip: Serve in a stemmed glass with a large ice cube. Sometimes the presentation makes even the simplest drink feel like a little celebration.
2. My Favorite Everyday Non-Alcoholic Beverage: The Botanical Lime Fizz
Simple, refreshing, and perfect for everyday sipping.
Not every alcohol-free drink needs a complicated recipe. Some of my favorite combinations are also the simplest.
This is my inspiration for an afternoon refreshment or a relaxing evening at home.
Ingredients
6–8 oz chilled sparkling mineral water
Juice of ½ fresh lime
2–3 dashes All The Bitter Orange Cardamom Bitters
Fresh mint leaves
Ice
Cucumber ribbons or lime slices for garnish
Instructions
Fill a tall glass with ice.
Squeeze in the fresh lime juice.
Add All The Bitter Orange Cardamom Bitters.
Top with chilled sparkling mineral water.
Gently stir and finish with fresh mint and cucumber.
Why I love it: It's crisp, light, and full of refreshing botanical flavor. The orange and cardamom add a sophisticated twist to an otherwise simple sparkling water.
And that's what I love about creating an intentional alcohol-free lifestyle. Sometimes the smallest changes make everyday moments feel special.
3. My After-Dinner Favorite: The Warm Ginger & Botanical Digestive Tonic
A comforting, botanical-inspired drink for winding down after a meal.
This recipe is inspired by the traditional use of bitter botanicals in after-dinner beverages.
When I stopped drinking, I became more interested in how everyday ingredients, mindful habits, and simple choices could support my overall well-being.
Ginger became one of my favorite ingredients to incorporate into my wellness routine, and pairing it with alcohol-free bitters creates a lovely after-dinner drink.
Ingredients
6 oz warm water (not boiling)
2–3 thin slices of fresh ginger
2 dashes All The Bitter Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters
1 tsp fresh lemon juice
½ tsp honey (optional)
A small cinnamon stick (optional)
Instructions
Add fresh ginger to a mug of hot water.
Allow it to steep for 5–7 minutes.
Let the water cool slightly.
Add lemon juice, honey, and All The Bitter Aromatic Bitters.
Stir gently and enjoy slowly.
Why I love it: It's warm, aromatic, and comforting. Instead of reaching for a traditional after-dinner cocktail, I get to enjoy a simple moment of relaxation that aligns with how I want to feel.
Prairie's Tip: Enjoy this drink while reading a favorite book, reflecting on your day, or simply taking a few quiet minutes for yourself.

The Wellness Connection: What Are the Benefits of Bitters?
Bitters have a fascinating history in traditional food and herbal practices.
Bitter-tasting plants have long been incorporated into aperitifs, herbal preparations, and after-meal beverages.
Here's what makes them interesting from a wellness perspective.
1. Bitter flavors and digestion
Bitter taste receptors are involved in how the body responds to bitter compounds. Early research suggests certain bitter substances may influence digestive signaling and secretions.
2. Botanical ingredients
Ingredients such as citrus peel, gentian, and aromatic spices have long histories in traditional herbal preparations.
All The Bitter uses whole botanicals to create complex flavors without alcohol.
3. Ginger and after-dinner comfort
Ginger has been studied for certain digestive concerns, particularly nausea.
I enjoy incorporating fresh ginger into warm drinks because of its comforting flavor and its place in traditional wellness practices.
4. A satisfying alcohol-free alternative
For me, one of the greatest benefits is having another delicious option that supports my alcohol-free lifestyle.
I can enjoy beautiful drinks, connect with friends, and unwind at the end of the day without compromising my values.
Beyond Sobriety: Creating Something Meaningful
One of the most meaningful lessons I've learned on my recovery journey is that lasting change isn't just about what we stop doing.
It's about what we begin creating.
And that's another reason I feel connected to the story behind All The Bitter.
A Little About the Founders
All The Bitter was founded by husband-and-wife team Carly and Ian Blessing, former sommeliers who worked together at the renowned French Laundry in Napa Valley.
After starting a family, they made the decision to stop drinking alcohol in 2019. But their appreciation for beautifully crafted beverages didn't disappear.
When they struggled to find alcohol-free bitters that delivered the complexity they loved, they decided to create their own.
What began as a personal lifestyle change became a meaningful business dedicated to helping others enjoy sophisticated drinks without alcohol.
Today, they handcraft their bitters in Chico, California, and even contribute a portion of their sales to substance abuse and recovery programs.
I love that.
Their story is a beautiful example of something I believe deeply: Sometimes the very thing we choose to leave behind creates space for something extraordinary to emerge.
And that's what empowered recovery means to me.
When I stopped drinking, I didn't want my life to become smaller. I wanted it to become richer, healthier, and more aligned with who I was becoming.
That meant exploring new habits, discovering products that supported my values, and finding joy in everyday experiences.
Sometimes that looks as simple as making a beautiful alcohol-free drink in my kitchen.
It's not about replacing alcohol with something that tastes exactly the same. It's about discovering new ways to celebrate, connect, relax, and enjoy ourselves without feeling like we're missing anything.
Because an alcohol-free lifestyle can be just as beautiful, flavorful, and fulfilling as we choose to make it.
